Low Self-Esteem

Self-esteem comes from the comparison relating to other individuals. For example, someone could be playing on a sports team, and they could have a high self-esteem because they are confident that they are more skilled than most of the individuals around then or vice versa. They could have low self-esteem because they see that they are less skilled than most of their teammates. A perfectionist expects the best of themselves 100% of the time even though this is not possible. They could view others around them and consider themselves to not be good enough based on someone else's performance. This person typically does not have self-compassion for themselves because they do not allow for themselves to have grace.

A stereotype for females is that they are more emotional than males, but that they keep their anger inward, and they do not express it openly. Whereas for men, one of the only emotions they are "allowed" to express is anger.

Difficult memories can impact everyday lives even though it was in the past. It could inflict trauma or change the way people view different events, people, objects etc. This would also be classified as a change in this person's schema. One way someone can start to move past these memories is to recognize that these memories effect their life. They can begin to move forward by being in communication with another individual like a therapist. Here they can find ways to overcome these memories; they can acknowledge that they took place but that they do not have control over them. They can also try to focus on if there are any positive things that is happening in their life at the moment or that will take place in the future.

It is important for this person to acknowledge why they are feeling anxiety or stress and what is causing it. They need to regulate themselves with coping mechanisms. Some of these could be reading, listening to music, exercising etc. This being said these are a lot of avoidant coping mechanisms which means they are avoiding the actual adversity and not confronting it. An example of an active coping mechanism is to talk to someone else and learn how to take action to face the adversity.

Trust issues are built from passed experiences. If a person has trust issues, it could be a part of their schema, which leads to them thinking mistrust will take place in the future. It is important to know that every situation is different and not every person will treat them in this way. Someone may have developed trust issues from their past, but it does not mean that it will be a constant theme in their future.

You will know that you are in a healthy relationship because you will be able to openly voice your thoughts, opinions, beliefs etc. and have confidence that you will not be belittled for speaking out. A healthy relationship consists of safety, compromise, support etc. Building a healthy relationship first begins with trust, if both parties do not trust each other the relationship will not be authentic. Healthy communication is an important way to maintain a healthy relationship.
