Self-esteem comes from the comparison relating to other individuals. For example, someone could be playing on a sports team, and they could have a high self-esteem because they are confident that they are more skilled than most of the individuals around then or vice versa. They could have low self-esteem because they see that they are less skilled than most of their teammates. A perfectionist expects the best of themselves 100% of the time even though this is not possible. They could view others around them and consider themselves to not be good enough based on someone else's performance. This person typically does not have self-compassion for themselves because they do not allow for themselves to have grace.
